When You Think You Can’t Do Something

April 10, 2022

When you think you can’t do something, you are probably going to prove yourself right. If you wait until you are completely sure you can do it or do a good job, you will never get started. Taking a leap will get you moving and creating momentum that is crucial for growth, expansion and upleveling your life. Stop telling yourself “I can’t do it”.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

I’ve often felt that before I could start something new I would: a) have to know everything about it; and b) be able to do it really well. However, it turns out, that if you really want to start something, regardless of what it might be, often times, you just have to start. It turns out you can learn as you go. And if you don’t just take a leap of faith and start something, more often than not, you won’t ever do it.

Today, I recorded my first podcast. I have been thinking of starting my own podcast for months. But I had no idea if I would actually ever have topics to cover for a weekly publication. I mean, what could I possibly talk about that would be interesting to everyone? Besides, there is all the technology that has to be figured out. Sure, I could pay someone each month to do it, but I’m not ready to make that kind of financial commitment right away. So doing it myself meant figuring out all the bits and pieces that are needed. Frankly, my head is still spinning from learning how to set up my coaching practice!

Just Start

The best advice when it comes to starting something new is to just start. Commit to the idea/action/project, learn just enough to get you going, i.e., the next step, and do it. There will never be a right time. You will never know enough. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You really can learn as you go. And unless you have a ton of money to through at whatever it is you want to create, chances are it’s not going to be great. But that’s OK. It’s better to start somewhere, to keep going and to figure it out as you go.

Sometimes, you don’t need to know everything before you begin. You just need to know enough to take the next right step. And then the next one, and so on.

Your work may be a little rough and you will probably look back at it and cringe a little, but that’s OK.

Everyone has to start somewhere. You might be terrible at it at first. Most people are, but that’s how we learn.

Courage

It takes courage to put yourself and your work out there. Yep, there will be critics. There might be haters.

But you can hold your head high knowing that you had the courage to take that leap. To learn that thing. To create something and put it out into the world that no one else had.

That is a big deal.

And it’s a lot of fun.

So, go write that book, learn how to paint, enrol in that course, publish that poem.

Fortune favours the brave.

I believe in you.

Stop telling yourself “I can’t do it”and start telling yourself you can figure it out. Take the next right step and then the next. Build your momentum and create something wonderful.
