Investing My Time Wisely to Make an Impact

Starting my own business has taught me a lot about managing my time in order to make an impact.

It’s shown me just how bad I’ve been until now at getting stuff done.

Mainly what I’ve learned is that time spent on something does not equal quality or impact.

You do not need to spend a great deal of time on something to make progress. Or do a great job. Often, and through a lot of the messaging from society, the media, etc. We believe the more time we spend doing something, the better. We tell ourselves we don’t have enough time to spend on something or do something. This is worst thought ever.

The problem is that we will put off doing something because we think we need a lot of time to do a good job and to have an impact at work, on our health, with our kids or partners, family, to make money or whatever. Or we’ll feel all this pressure to spend time doing one thing over another and feeling like nothing we do is ever enough.

We have been fed the line that more is better. And a lot is the best. To make a lot of money, it will require you to work long hours. If you want to be successful, you have to work hard. Or, to lose weight, you have to exercise an hour a day. To make progress, you have to spend a lot of time on it.

The truth is it is time to rethink these outdated ideas and beliefs. All this hustle and grind is not necessary. In particular, one area in my life I noticed I can make a huge impact on my life without spending a vast amount of time, is with yoga and meditation. I’ve found that with 15 minutes of meditation, and 15 minutes of yoga a day, I feel calmer and better. In fact, I feel significantly calmer and better.

I used to feel that for exercise or meditation practice to have an impact, I’d have to spend 45 to 60 minutes engaged in it. But, that’s not true at all.

Then I started thinking about other areas in life. I looked at where I’ve been taught about the need to put in so many hours to succeed.

If I make a plan to sit down and give myself 30 minutes to write a blog post and that’s it, that is what I will do. It’s a skill I’ve had to learn and it requires discipline. But I’ve found the more I organise my schedule like, the better I am at producing results and the freer I feel. It all seems a lot simpler now. I’ve experienced the benefits so I never want to go back to the sloppy, clunky ways of doing things like I was before. I feel sleeker, more efficient, competent! And so much lighter!

I’ve found I don’t need to spend a lot of time to make progress, get ahead or do more.

I focus, plan, execute.

There’s so little stress and no pressure. I’m enjoying this process. It’s actually fun. I have more energy than I ever did.

So, question your beliefs around time and how much is actually needed to produce results.

Make your plan and sit down in the alloted time and produce those results.

B minus work is acceptable. Let go of those perfectionist tendencies. They only seem necessary but really they are wasting your time and holding you back.

This is a skill, but you can learn how to do it and you will become better at it.

And you will feel so much better.
